The Monte Carlo was available in SS and non-SS trims, but which one is more attractive?
Pretty sure these are from the same year. It's really hard to find pictures of a non-SS monte.
I dunno how to make polls so just post in the comments I guess.

I liked the Monte Carlo that came with the Buick Regal GNX badge hehehe. My uncle had a Monte SS and I loved hearing when he started it up in the mornings but I think I would prefer to go with the more simple look of the non SS.

The one in the top picture is actualy not the non-SS but rather a 3rd "Euro" version that was more like the Cadillac front ends of the day. This is a non SS above.

I'm a fan of the front ends on the '78s and '79s. Forward sweeping headlamps FTW.
This one's for sale..... $12K for a malaise era car..... I doubt it was that much new....

That front bumper has seen better days. Some of the close ups show the car needs a good detailing as well. I'd offer 8.....

I like the SS style, because NASCAR.

That blue car is a pre-87 Monte Carlo (non-SS, all 81-85 and 86 Sport Coupe)
I drove an '81 that looked just like that, except having a white landau top, when most had a darker blue vinyl landau top.
The white car above is an 86-88 LS face-lift Monte, with smoother bumpers, unified Caprice-like headlights, and smoother trim, and Camaro-style aero mirrors. 86 had early-style Sport Coupe, updated LS model, and the performance-oriented SS. 87 and 88 dropped the Sport Coupe, and were just either LS or SS.
The 81-88 SS had the same aero NASCAR-inspired nose the whole time, with 4-beam headlights, the difference could be told by whether the earlier cars had tail lights that are only visible from the back, or later cars that the tail light plastic wrapped over the edge of the rear fender quarter trim pieces, and the deletion of the indented trim between the trunk lid and the bumper cover, as well as the bumper cover being smoother.
The 86 and 87 Monte Carlo SS Aerocoupe NASCAR homologation was a special variant of Monte Carlo SS. Monte Carlo's G-body Pontiac sister, the Grand Prix 2+2 variant, pictured below in silver, was available with the sleeker rear glass for NASCAR homologation rules, also, and rarer even than the 87 Monte Aerocoupe SS.

Wow, that de-striped 87 Monte SS Aerocoupe T-top is great.
Although, rather than painting the stock 15" wheels, I would have put at least 17 or 18" wheels on the car, and perhaps raked the car ever so slightly by lowering the front a bit more.
Camaro SS 18s, or Impala SS ROH 18" wheels with gray painted centers, would probably do nicely. 20" Zeta-body Camaro SS wheels might actually look really good, too, but might be slightly on the too-large side.
Although I think the owner chose a bit wrong for aftermarket... if this is indeed the same car with 20"s.

You know I usually try to be open minded about people's choices in cars and what they do with them but... if I see a non SS Monte on anything other than Dayton's I judge very harshly.

I know it is super simple and kind of a played out but, if I had a Monte Carlo it would be de-striped on 18" Iroc's or 18" Torque Thrusts. I don't think either of these wheels are 18s put you get the idea.

Nice.
As much as I like G-bodies, I wish they were a bit sleeker... the windshields are a bit upright, and the roofline is quite square without the aerocoupe glass...
So my favorite G-body cars would actually be F-body... probably a 3rd or 4th gen Pontiac Firebird, as 2+2 coupes go... or a Fiero or C4 Corvette if rear seats aren't required. For "boxy" I'd go with something practical like a GMC Typhoon... yeah, practical, that's it.
No G-body, aerocoupe or otherwise, can beat a Firebird Formula or GTA's aerodynamics.
